Numbers Retreat

Subscribe in a reader
We've just returned from a 3 day retreat at Ocean Isle beach.  Each year we try and take a few days to just totally unplug from the curriculum and go somewhere fun and relax.  We always just spring it on them.  It's a total surprise:  The students come to class in the morning expecting lecture as usual and we basically just scrap the work that was on the schedule, give them a few minutes to pack, and take off. The retreat always comes at just the right time.  Its a great time to just hang out and relax, and it's always good to get some face time with Jerry and Charlotte (CLM executive directors).

Thank you Kendall, Mike, Scott, Jerry, Jonathan for opening your homes to us and helping make this happen.  This is a HUGE boost for the students and we appreciate it!

This is what happens when two ESBS graduates team up for life (aka...get married) and move back into the real world...wherever they end up, that place gets infected with solid Bible teaching and the grace of God.  I found the invitation below randomly on facebook yesterday.  Its an invite for University of Miami college students:  to a 7 week Bible seminar put on by two former students (David and Madison Sargent).

This is exactly what we wanted to see when we started this school.  People totally changed by Jesus, ignited with a passion for his word, out in the world sharing it with others.  Its SO COOL to see it happening...here's a copy of the invite:

"Trying to understand The Bible can be pretty intimidating. It was, after all, written by at least 40 different people in over hundreds of years of history.

Comprehending The Bible can be even further complicated by the fact that we, as UM students and 21st century scholars, are removed from the cultures in which the its texts were written by thousands of miles as well as thousands of years.

One of the things that is helpful to learn The Bible is to have a basic "Big Picture" understanding of its narrative. Through seeing a broad timeline, you can evidently see God's consistency and faithfulness throughout biblical history and even see how characters and events fall into place.

As part of our passion to equip people with the knowledge and confidence it takes to study and interpret The Bible, we would like to invite you to come and survey the entire New and Old Testaments this semester. We've designed seven seminar-type discussions to objectively present the entire content of The Bible over the semester.

Our goal is that from these discussions you would be more than capable of navigating through any passage of The Bible with a sufficient understanding of the historical, cultural and literary context in which that passage was written.

This will not be an interpretation or a discussion of doctrine/theology. Rather it will be simply an overview of the content. (Our hope is that you feel more confident to make your interpretation from a better understanding of content and context.)

Here is the schedule for the discussions:

January 24 – The Formation of the Bible, Old and New Testament Survey - Constructing A Timeline

February 7 – Part 1: The Covenant of Adam, "The Fall" & The Covenant of Abraham
(Genesis 1-15)

February 21 – Part 2: Abraham’s Family Tree, The Nation of Israel is Formed in Egypt, The Exodus From Slavery & The Covenant of Law Under Moses
(Genesis 16- Deuteronomy)

March 7 – Part 3: Entering The Promised Land, Israel's Theocracy, Early Monarchy, The Promise of David & Solomon's Temple
(Joshua - 2 Samuel, Job - Ecclesiastes)

March 28 – Part 4: The Kingdom Splits, Prophets Speak of Sin, Judgement & Restoration, Babylonian Exile & Return
(Kings - Nehemiah, Isaiah - Malachi)

April 11 – Part 5: The Coming of Jesus Christ (The Last Adam), A New Covenant, The Pentecost, The Age of Tension, A new Heaven and Earth...
(Matthew - Revelation)

April 25 – Old and New Testament Survey & the book of Hebrews

May 2 - End of Semester Celebration!

AUDIO LECTURES ONLINE

Subscribe in a reader

Over the past several months we've been working hard to finish a brand new website (www.esbsonline.org).  We've just taken a big step closer with the addition of an "audio" page that allows you to download this year's live classroom lectures.

Over the next few weeks we'll be posting EVERY CLASSROOM LECTURE FROM THIS YEAR'S SCHOOL ON OUR WEBSITE.  As we continue to progress through the Bible we'll continue to post new audio tracts until the entire Bible is covered.

The lectures are designed to equip our students with the big picture concepts needed to understand each book of the Bible.  They're great resources to accompany your own personal study of a particular book.  We hope you enjoy them.

On a different note...THANK YOU EVERYONE for contributing to the Weigel's tuition this year.  They have seen God use the ESBS community to provide for them in a big way.  Last quarter they did receive the funds necessary to continue on in the course!  They're within about $2000 now of having what they need to finish out the year.  Thanks again!

Financial need

Nathanael and Abigail Weigel

Merry Christmas everyone!  We're quickly approaching the end of an awesome Christmas break; ready to start the Old Testament next Monday!

The students scattered to the wind for the holidays.  Daniel (our Norwegian student) went home to Norway for the break and landed in London Heathrow just in time for the snowstorm to shut the airport down completely.  He spent 70 hours in the terminal.  Ouch.

As we return from break we do have one pressing financial need that I'd like you to pray for and be aware of.  Nathanael and Abigail Weigel (married couple from Virginia..last week I mentioned that Nathanael has just been accepted to med. school for the fall) are in need of about $1800 in tuition for next quarter (DUE JAN 10).  Lets pray that God provides the funds they need to continue on in the program. They are both model students, they add a ton to our community, and I feel confident that they're supposed to continue on with us.  Please pray that God would provide the necessary funds.

If you'd like to contribute, just let me know via e-mail (tphillips@camplurecrest.org)

blessings everyone

Sargent wedding

Two ESBS graduates got married last weekend (David Sargent 06-07 and Madison Withrow 08-09)! I had the privilege of conducting the ceremony.  It was an awesome day!  They'll be living in Miami while David finishes up his degree there.  We're excited to see them start life together.  Congratulations you guys!

The students are on break until Jan 3.  We start right up with the Old Testament when we return.  Please pray that the students have a restful break.  Also pray for Nathanael and Abigail's finances.  Nathanael was just accepted to medical school for next fall at Virginia Tech.  They're in need of a tuition deposit of $1500 for medical school, as well as some remaining tuition for their time here at the ESBS.

Merry Christmas everyone.  blessings to you all.
